Corrosion Management System (CMS) is involved in a range of activities including corrosion prevention, corrosion mitigation, corrosion monitoring and inspection.
Corrosion management is not just about sending NDT technicians on the site and painting pipework. Effective management of corrosion control and monitoring activities are key elements of Asset Integrity Management. Corrosion management is a cross-discipline activity (Technical & Non-Technical).
The primary objective of the CMS is to contribute to a reduction in the number of hydrocarbon releases, which can be directly attributed to corrosion.
Corrosion management also covers other integrity risks, including those from stress corrosion cracking, embrittlement, erosion, etc., as well as “simple corrosion” (i.e. general, pitting and crevice corrosion).

The corrosion policy provides a structured framework for identification of risks associated with corrosion, and the development and operation of suitable risk control measures.
Practical experience from the North Sea has shown that the development of comprehensive corrosion management systems, coupled with a commitment by both the operator, maintenance contractor and specialist sub-contractors / consultants, can lead to a major improvement in the operation of offshore topside process facilities.
